March 27 - April 3 Journal
Because we just did a journal last week, this journal may be a bit shorter. For the Caltech visit last Thursday, issues with the bus resulted in us leaving at 12:50 instead of 12:30. This probably stemed from Club Rush happening that day and the closed-campus policy. The bus, however, left a tad earlier than 12:50 so we left Connie at school for this visit. Because we arrived around 20 minutes late, Dr. Hassibi had left. This visit also conflicted with Robotics' Idaho competition so only Robert, Puja, and I were at Caltech.
At Caltech, we spent our time brainstorming how our end of year presentation would be done. We concluded on an idea of a funnel, going from the larger concepts into our specific project. We would have a section on the different concept maps we made as concepts like decision trees and clustering are not super related to dots and boxes. We would then go into our possible project ideas we had. These would include the vape detector, food recommender, etc. After showing how we got to dots and boxes, we would then touch on the different algorithms like Monte Carlo and Q Learning and present our conclusions. We were still wondering what we could do to spice up the introduction though.
Another event coinciding with this journal is my college decision process. I feel that I should express how this class has really added insight into what college I should choose. Having several strong options, the background knowledge that this class has developed for me is making my research into college classes/research more efficient. I somewhat understand the concepts that higher level classes will be covering, and I know more about machine learning research at the respective colleges. I also really enjoy getting the advice of group mates as they understand computer science majors' intricacies better than some other classmates.
Because of the Healthy Kids Survey and ASB elections, today was a minimum day, so we lost some time. Right now, I plan on looking into with Robert and Connie how to edit the reward system for Q Learning. We also found on Tuesday how to train the Q Learning bot and were confused by results saying "Kolo [some number, some number]." We also tried to organize Dr. Hassibi coming to SMHS but our conflicting schedules make that idea fizzle out. I also feel that I enjoy being in between the coding group and Q learning group as I think keeping each other updated is something that needs to be better executed.
